The traditional Japanese university approach to mathematics is to provide students with technical training in a narrow field and make them write several papers.
However, this is not the approach the Graduate School of Mathematics employs.
One reason is because it is ineffective.
It is more efficient in the study and research of mathematics to value each and every student’s unique character.
Another reason we do not use this approach is that no one can predict what students will be doing in 10 or 20 years as researchers.
Since we want our students to be productive researchers working in the dynamic field of mathematics, we offer various seminars and discussion meetings to cultivate an awareness of problems in the field among our students, in addition to providing them with the basic techniques required to engage in academic research. |
