Determining the characters of tilting modules over algebraic groups in prime characteristic is a very difficult problem. At the moment there is no general conjecture about what the answer can be. After a motivational discussion in this talk we present a partial descriptioon of the characters of tilting modules. The result is formulated by comparing them to the (known) characters of tilting modules over quantum groups.
