Your project looks very interesting.  I have some experience writing
custom widgets in labgtk2, although the ones I wrote were all for
displaying different types of graphs, so perhaps not so applicable for
you.  Anyway, if you contact me offlist I can email you the source for
those widgets; they may give you some ideas.
