Is the problem specific to lablgtk2, or also happens with other gtk2 programs? One potential cause is the absence of a Render extension in the X server. I could avoid it by setting GDK_USE_XFT to 0 (i.e., disable truetype fonts). env GDK_USE_XFT=0 lablgtk2 The use of this environment variable should be more advertised!
