While I recommend you follow Jacques' advice and use the SVN version, I should point out that autodetection of gtk-quartz (and support thereof) was released in lablgtk 2.12.0. Unfortunately the version referenced in MacPorts is still 2.10.1. So if for some reason you only want to install a numbered release with the quartz back-end, you can, and if you have the possibility to update the lablgtk2 port file, it would be nice for all the people who have gtk-quartz out there...
